CAPITOL HILL SAFETY COALITION
Created
in the fall of 2007, the Capitol Hill Safety Coalition works to increase the awareness and activities related to the safety of Capitol Hill residents, businesses, and non-profits.

Members: Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce, Greater Seattle Business Association, Seattle Commission for Sexual Minorities, Seattle Office for Civil Rights, Broadway Business Improvement Area, Gay City, Home Alive, Northwest Network, Seattle Police Department (East Precinct representatives, LGBT Advisory Council), Seattle Neighborhood Group, Seattle Gay News, etc.

Events: In November of 2007, CHSC put on a public forum on hate crimes and safety at Seattle Central Community College for the public and invited guests from Home Alive, the Seattle Police Department, and the Prosecutor's Office to discuss the recent hate crimes on Capitol Hill and across the city. In April of 2008, CHSC sponsored the Capitol Hill Safety Forum. Community members attended workshops including a self-defense training from Home Alive, a domestic violence discussion from NW Network, and a Hate Crimes 101 training from the Seattle Police Department and the King County Prosecutor's Office. Media coverage of the event included news reports on KIRO 710, KOMO 4 News, KCPQ 13 News, and two reports on KIRO 7 News.

Public Campaign: CHSC worked with the Seattle Police Department and the King County Prosecutor's Office to develop a Hate Crime Awareness Safety poster and pocket information card. A press conference and media blast was developed for the unveiling of the campaign.
